The most mesmerising destination in Africa – Namibia combines mountainous dunes, extraterrestrial landscapes, an eerie fogbound coast and the wildlife is equally impressive.

Itinerary

Day 1: Windhoek

Airport Transfers to Windhoek. Welcome chat and introduction from Philip, Tim our local guide. Group get together and a good chat over dinner.
Overnight at the Hilton Hotel

Day 2: Windhoek to Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch

Depart in good time to Bagatelle. We will take an early afternoon walk to the Kalahari Bushmen Village from the Ranch where we will set up for a portrait session with the Bushmen and give you the opportunity to learn how to light a shoot, shoot with screens and directly to capture one.

Day 3: Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch to Sossusvlei

The Game Ranch offers the perfect opportunity for a post production session on the portrait photography for the previous day.  Drive to the Sossus Dune Lodge. Enjoy a sundowner with drinks and Snacks on the Elim Dune.

Day 4: Sossusvlei

Early Wake-up call, drive to Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei for sunrise photography at this magical location. Afternoon trip to Dune 45 for sunset photography.

Day 5: Sossusvlei to Namib Dunes Star Camp

Weather permitting we will have an early wake-up for a spectacular sunrise balloon ride over the world’s highest dunes to take some stunning shots and pull together a travel-log style photo story. If weather doesn't allow we will visit Tim and Philip's secret dunes. Brunch back at the lodge before leaving to the Dune Star Camp at the Namib Desert. Settle into the camp and discuss the process of star photography. We will spend time after dinner setting up for the star photography session with the option of sleeping under the stars.

Day 6: Namib Dunes Star Camp to Swakopmund

We depart to Swakopmund driving through the northern Namib Naukluft Park taking the nature trail route which offers some wonderful opportunities to capture the landscapes en route – stopping at designated areas including the Lunar Landscape range and Solitaire for the famous apple pie at Moose McGregor's bakery.

Day 7: Swakopmund

Catamaran Cruise in Walvis Bay served with sparkling wine and Oysters to spot seals, pelicans, dolphins and other marine life. The afternoon is spent at leisure with the opportunity to go through post production with Philip and Tim or to go on a wonder around the town of Swakopmund, get supplies, shop, visit the Museum and take photos.

Day 8: The Skeleton Coast

An early start and drive to Cape Cross along the Skeleton Coast visiting the seals and stopping at various key locations that offer photographic opportunities including dune and ship wrecks. We end the day at Terrace Bay where the amenities are basic but charming!

Day 9: Skeleton Coast to Damaraland

After breakfast we set off to Damaraland – it's beautiful and terrifying with immense shimmering gravel plains that narrow into dry riverbeds in deep gorges and home to desert adapted elephants. We'll take in the Damaraland Living Museum and visit the Twyfelfontein Rock engravings before settling into the stunning Camp Kipwe to enjoy a sundowner with a view – ideal for photos!

Day 10: Damaraland

In the morning we take a Nature Drive in search of the desert adapted Elephants. The afternoon is spent with a post production session and leisure time. Camp Kipwe is one of our favourite places to stay and a great opportunity to go for a wonder and find great photo spots.

Day 11: Damaraland – Etosha National Park

It's a four hour drive to Etosha so we set off in good time. En-route we stop at the Petrified Forest which offer great photo opportunities. In the afternoon we set off for our first game drive at Etosha on search of giraffes, elephants, impalas, zebras and more.

Day 12: Etosha National Park

There are many great days on this trip but this is one of the highlights. A full day game drive into the immense pan of white sand on the bed of a long-vanished lake in search of magnificent creatures including the rare black rhinos. Etosha truly is magical and is one of our favourite spots of this mesmerising country. The day is ended by a talk with Rachel on a giraffe study conducted in Etosha National Park.

Day 13: Etosha National Park to Erindi Private Game Reserve

Early start to leave Etosha National Park and drive to Erindi Private Game Reserve. Erindi is another very special place where they are passionate and incredibly well informed about the wildlife and always keen to pass on their knowledge. In the afternoon we'll go on a game drive with the opportunity to view cheetahs and leopards and more.

Day 14: Erindi Private Game Reserve

We get out of the vehicles and make the most of the local guides who will take us on a bushman walk to explore the area and view cheetahs. The afternoon is a great opportunity for post production with Philip and Tim.

Day 15: Erindi Private Game Reserve to Windhoek

Our final game drive of the tour before we head back to Windhoek after lunch for a group get together to go through your photography before a farewell dinner.

Day 16: Windhoek

Transfer to International Airport.

Equipment needed

A large backpack / hold all plus smaller backpack for equipment. Your  camera – if you have a selection of lenses we recommend you bring the longest you have plus converters if you have any. If you have a laptop please bring it along. We use Capture One Pro, Lightroom and Photoshop for post production but will be able to assist you with any software you use. Please feel free to email or call us if you have any questions in regard to equipment. We will be bringing along a good selection of bodies and long lenses for you to try out.

Who are we?

Philip North-Coombes creates and leads every Tao Photo Tour. He founded Tao Associates in 2002 to produce professional photo shoots. The idea of running photo tours started after he completed the first 'Everest +' documentary for the BBC in 2007. Philip is a multi-award winning photographer, lauded by the British Journal of Photography. He has produced celebrated and innovative photography for 27 years. His assignments take him around the world, be it working for top international fashion brands and journals, breaking new ground as a sport and lifestyle photographer, making challenging documentaries or giving his time to frontline charities. Fascinated by the natural world and the lure of extreme and unexplored locations, he thrives on fresh challenges. From the oceans of Hawaii to the barren beauty of Iceland, from the slums of India to the stark grandeur of Mount Everest, the colour and contrast of his work creates a unique portfolio and fuels his ambition to achieve ever better results. Tim Wheeler studied both the conceptual and technical aspects of art photography. He has an immense wealth of knowledge from over 16 year experience working as a Digital Operator in the professional photographic industry. This has allowed him access to the cutting edge of photographic technological development. Tim has worked with Philip for over 10 years  – their combined experience and enthusiasm for photography make them an industry leading team. He has an infectious love of imagery, constantly looking for new ways to explore the beauty of the world. Tim will teach you a variety of different procedures in order to maintain control of your shots; from understanding the basics of file and colour management to the creativity of various grading techniques, Tim will guide you through processes to enable you to get the best results from your equipment and develop your style of photography.
